What's on the first weekend of October in London

Even in a city as vibrant and active as London, it can sometimes be overwhelming and hard to find something to do. But getting out of the house and doing something fun is certainly something we’re craving collectively right now, even as the weather starts to turn colder and autumn makes its presence known. So, to help you out, we’ve rounded up our favourite things happening in London this weekend!

Hokusai -The Great Picture Book of Everything at The British Museum

The iconic and influential Katsushika Hokusai is one of Japan’s most celebrated artists, made globally famous with his piece Under the Wave off Kanagawa, popularly known as The Great Wave. For the first time ever, The British Museum brings together 103 of his drawings for a glorious exhibition that lasts until the end of January and offers a unique chance to study the work of this iconic artist.

Hamlet at The Young Vic Theatre

If you’ve been missing live theatre, this is the perfect opportunity to dive back in with a classic Shakespearean drama. With director Greg Hersov taking the reins and Cush Jumbo as Hamlet, this production is sure to be electric and bring Hamlet to life in a way we haven't seen before. While it doesn’t officially open until the 19th, previews are open this weekend for under £30 and if you want to go to the official open, you should probably get tickets now as this is likely to sell out quickly! Learn more about the show and book your tickets on their website, here.

Catch one of the Wigmore Series at Wigmore Hall

Watching a concerto is not something that you might typically find someone under the age of 35 doing on a Saturday night, but the Wigmore series is certainly one to change that tune, especially with their £5 tickets for under 35s. On Friday night, you can watch the IMS Prussia Cove quintet play Wiancko, Brahms, Turnage and Fauré, whilst on Saturday you’ll find Clara Osowski operatically singing her way through the ages with music from 18th century Schubert to contemporary composer Libby Larsen. Find out all that’s happening at Wigmore Hall here.

Mixing it up at The Hayward Gallery

Most of us think of painting as something that the greats of old did, but this exhibition at The Hayward Gallery is here to change your mind. With contemporary works from over 30 artists that span three generations – from 28 to 87 years old, this exhibition highlights the role that painting still plays in our modern world. As Southbank Centre’s website puts it, ‘artists in this exhibition make works that oscillate between observation and invention, depiction and allegory, illusion and materiality.’

Redchurch open house

Finally, we’d like to invite you to our open house this weekend at our Redchurch St. store in Shoreditch. It’s sure to be a fun weekend full of wellbeing, yoga, shopping + cocktails. Our friends at BLOK are hosting yoga at 9:30 each morning and with only 12 spots available, it’ll be an intimate and nourishing experience. Email us at info@anatome.co to secure your spot! Plus, in the afternoons, from 2-6pm each day, our friends at Jensen’s Gin will be joining us for music and botanical cocktails. To top it off, the whole store is going to be 20% off! It’s sure to be a blast and we can’t wait to see you there!
