WELLBEING THROUGH TIME
3,000-1,500 BC
Ayurveda is a holistic health and wellness system of practices and formulations that strives to create harmony between body, mind, and spirit. Ayurvedic regimens are tailored to the individual's constitution, including nutritional, exercise, socialisation and hygiene needs – aiming to create a physical and mental balance that prevents illness. Among Ayurvedic benefits and practices carried on to date are Yoga and meditation.
WELLBEING THROUGH TIME
3,000 – 2,000 BC
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is arguably the first medical system documented in human history. Influenced by Taoism and Buddhism, it utilises a holistic approach, emphasising disease prevention and cultivating harmony to promote health. Today, acupuncture, herbal therapies, qi gong and tai chi, which originated from this system, are commonly practised - alone or in combination with Western medicine.
Wellbeing Through Time
500 BC
In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates was arguably the pioneering physician to propose preventative medicine. He believed in working against sickness before it happened over treating diseases. Hippocrates was also the first physician to state that health problems are consequences of diets, lifestyles, and environmental factors.

In Ancient Rome, medicine was highly preventative, based on the Greek philosophy - focussing on the individual's diet and lifestyle. Romans also had a highly developed public health system and public infrastructure. With aqueducts, sewers, and public baths, their high hygiene standards prevented the spread of infections and earned them a healthier population.

1790s
Homoeopathy appears in Germany. Homoeopaths, a category of 200,000 physicians in practice today, believe in curing sick people with substances that cause symptoms of a given disease in those who are healthy. Physician Samuel Hahneman led the development of a health system utilising natural substances to promote self-healing responses from the body.

1860s
Also in Germany, a priest named Sebastian Kneipp introduced his eponymous cure system. Calling it 'Kneipp Cure', he combined herbalism, hydrotherapy, and a regime of exercise and nutrition to treat and prevent disease.
Also during this period, the first recorded movement of cure promoted by a healthy mind appeared: Theories of Mentally-Aided Healing by Phineas Quimby.
Wellbeing Through Time
1870s
Osteopathy, a holistic system based on manipulating muscles and joints by Andrew Taylor Still develops. In modern medicine, Osteopathy is a speciality practised by nearly 200,000 physicians.
Wellbeing Through Time
1880s
Nutritional research is at the heart of the work of Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner. He advocates a diet with higher, consistent doses of fruits and vegetables to keep an individual healthy, holistically protecting bodily functions.
Wellbeing Through Time
1900s
John Harvey Kellogg, director of a Sanitorium in Michigan, advocates an early version of what we today understand as a healthy, wholesome lifestyle. Naturopathy consists of exercise, fresh air, a healthy diet, and hydrotherapy, composing an overall notion of 'learning to be well'. This system was supported by herbal formulations, massages and other wellbeing practices - closer to anatomē's practices.
In Austria, Rudolph Steiner, a philosopher interested in spirituality, developed the anthroposophy movement and the anthroposophical holistic medicine movement.
Wellbeing Through Time
1980 - 2000
Corporations, medical organisations, and academia take the wellness movement seriously. One of the most prominent publications of this movement was the Berkeley Wellness Letter from 1984. It presented science-backed articles, often contradicting medical beliefs, gaining momentum and followers.
Also, during this period, wellness reached the mainstream as a new industry, with fitness programs, workplace awareness, and celebrity-created and endorsed products and brands.
