Why lavender oil is a leading sleep aid and how it works
Lavandula is a genus of 47 known species of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae. Originated in the Mediterranean Sea, Southern Europe, Africa, and South Asian countries, this plant’s oil is widely used to treat anxiety, depression, and skin treatments, including acne and eczema. Lavender is also one of the most well-known plants for helping us fall asleep, providing a relaxing and sedative effect.
The main constituents of lavender are linalool, linalyl acetate, 1,8-cineole B-ocimene, terpinene-4-ol, and camphor. These compounds are believed to stimulate GABA, a relaxing neurotransmitter required for a quiet night of restorative sleep. Low GABA activity has been linked to insomnia, with one study finding that levels in people with insomnia were 30% lower than those who slept through the night. It is the most studied and effective essential oil for improving sleep health, which is why it is included in all of our sleep oil blends.
We uniquely blend the nurturing scents of Cornish, Provençal and Himalayan Lavenders due to their high levels of linalyl acetate and linalool, which have proven relaxing and sleep-inducing properties. Three types of lavender (French, Cornish and Himalayan) have been carefully selected for our oils due to their calming properties due to their high concentration of linalyl acetate and linalool.
Lavender also lowers the heart rate and reduces anxiety. With lavender being able to stimulate GABA, in addition to its relaxing properties, it is clear that lavender has a positive effect. It is the most studied and effective essential oil for improving sleep health, which is why it is included in all of our sleep oil blends.
