Postcard from Ischia: The Healing Waters of Italy
For centuries, people have been visiting Ischia to partake in its volcanic muds and mineral-rich waters, known for their health benefits. Ischia often gets overlooked by Capri, but those who know better are passionate about this island and so are is anatomē.
Ischia, often overshadowed by Capri, is a hidden gem known to a select few. Its allure lies in the hundreds of natural thermal springs with sulfuric, healing waters, believed to provide relief from respiratory diseases, rheumatism, and dermatitis. The island's history is steeped in glamour, with classic stars like Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Charlie Chaplin gracing its shores. Today, Ischia's unified appeal lies in its natural spas and restorative soul, making it a unique and exclusive spot in Italy and one of our favourite spots.
Our favourite places to unwind
1. The Bay of Sorgeto:
The gem on the island, not far from Sant'Angelo. Natural seawater mixes with thermal water, creating warm, salted water pockets perfect for relaxation, especially in the late evening, just take a water taxi to the beach, hop off and relax, we suggest late in the evening when the crowds have gone.
2. Club Scannella:
This idyllic beach club, located within Ischia's rocky coastline, offers awe-inspiring sea views, think Talented Mr Ripley. Accessible by walking down steep steps or via boat from nearby Sant'Angelo, its remote location is its greatest asset. It features cold saltwater pools, a heated swimming pool, easy sea access, and a perfect cove for snorkelling. The club also has 20 modest hotel rooms, all with sea views, and offers guests fishing experiences and scuba-diving excursions. The family-run club serves delicious fresh fish, salads, and pasta for lunch or dinner, the food is simply divine.
3. Mezzatorre Hotel & Thermal Spa:
Proudly surveying the seaside vistas from a rocky headland, this hotel features guest rooms and beautiful public spaces tucked into 17 acres of pine wood forest. It makes the most of its stunning natural setting: the island's thermal hot springs flow into three water therapy pools, and volcanic mud is used in spa treatments. It's the sister hotel to Il Pellicano, so expect impeccable service and attention to detail.
4. The trails of Epomeo:
Climbing the stunning Mount Epomeo early in the morning for a hike is a must. At 789 meters high, the trek to the peak offers glorious panoramic island views. Starting the trek from the village of Fontana, you can easily follow the well-sign-posted path to the mountain. The lush greenery and rolling vineyards of the mountain slopes are a sight to behold, and finish off with a mid morning swim when you get to the bottom.
5. Albergo il Monastero:
This atmospheric, serene, and stylish hotel is situated within the medieval Aragonese Castle, connected to the island of Ischia by a narrow causeway. The bedrooms, which were former monk cells, are simple, but the panoramic terrace is one of the most romantic spots on the island, the gardens are also extraordinary.
The vaulted ceilings, whitewashed walls, and thick medieval walls offer a refuge from the summer heat and add to the pervasive sense of calm. Modern artwork and contemporary decor add a stylish and luxurious update to the structure.
Of course, there are many other places and wonderful restaurants to visit in Ischia, but for now, discover these wonderful locations.
Enjoy an Italian summer dream!
